Lewis Hall Renovation

University of Washington

Seattle, Washington

Historic Preservation

Restoration of an original University of Washington icon.

Originally built in 1899 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Lewis Hall is the second oldest building on the University of Washington’s Seattle campus. SHKS Architects observed and evaluated the exterior conditions of the building and prepared documents for improvements to the roof, windows, and masonry. In addition to construction and design documents, historic research explaining the project’s investigative methodology, results, and treatment recommendations according to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards was presented in a clear format for the university. Paint was removed with a chemical poultice and the masonry was cleaned, stabilized and re-pointed with high-lime mortar. A roof diaphragm was installed: the first phase of a long-term seismic improvement plan. The iconic roof turrets, removed in the 1950s, were rebuilt based on photographic documentation to restore the original character of the historic campus building.
