Rainier Golf and Country Club

Client

Rainier Golf and Country Club

Location

Seattle, Washington

Scope

Renovation

A new, open and inviting place for people to gather.

The Rainier Golf and Country Club, founded in 1919, is Seattle’s second oldest private golf club. The original clubhouse, designed by Ellsworth Storey, was constructed in 1922 and sited to take advantage of the views towards Mount Rainer. With a number of ad hoc expansions to the clubhouse over the years, the old lounge obscured the original clubhouse in form and organization. SHKS led a robust master planning effort to guide the renovation of the clubhouse and reveal the integrity of the primary historic structures. The club’s 19th Hole, its lounge, has increasingly become the center of social activity for members and guests. A new, glazed pavilion replaced the 1952 structure creating an open, inviting place for people to gather. Large expanses of windows open onto an enlarged terrace. The lounge is organized with a variety of seating and socializing elements: bar areas and televisions to view tournaments, an open seating area for dining, and a fireplace lounge for private socializing.
