Renewing a campus for 21st century education.
The rehabilitation of Alumni Hall weaves the memories of an old residence and the symbol of a noteworthy school together, with the emotional center of a school emphasizing experiential learning with universal access, carbon conservation, and inspiring spaces for contemporary learning. Built in 1916 and sold to The Bush School in 1944, the venerable brick building remains significant to generations of students. Engagement with educators, students, and trustees framed a project honoring over 80 years of shared experience. Daylight connects learning spaces in the building through the informal learning spaces of stairs and hallways. The transformation exemplifies embodied carbon conservation and operational carbon was conserved through insulation strategies designed to retain character-defining features and assemblies. Seismic life-safety was achieved through a combination of braced and moment frames threaded into the original framing.
