Transforming existing spaces into a leading research hub.
The Data Science Studio adapted a physics/astronomy library into a collaborative space dedicated to data science methodologies at the University of Washington. The studio partners data scientists with researchers performing ongoing work in other fields within the university and from outside institutions to assist in interpreting data. Organizational innovation was key to the program and design, fostering an environment that encourages collaboration. A central social space facilitates interaction, increasing research productivity and promoting a sense of community and identity among all participants. Reconfigurable meeting and workspaces use Herman-Miller and Steelcase furniture systems to transform the former library into a flexible space, easily customized for specific research activities. Quiet areas for permanent staff are balanced with drop-in workspaces for small teams, technical discussions, and presentations.
