Historic libraries are built to endure, but they must continue to evolve. The renovation of Seattle Public Library’s University Branch carefully balances preservation with transformation, improving accessibility, flexibility, and community spaces while respecting the character of one of the city’s landmark Carnegie libraries.

Reimagining a Community Landmark

The renovation reorganizes the building to improve circulation, expand public services, and create welcoming spaces for reading, learning, and gathering. Staff work areas, building systems, and vertical circulation are thoughtfully relocated to service wings, allowing the library’s historic public spaces to become more open, intuitive, and flexible.

Preserving Character, Expanding Opportunity

Two carefully designed additions extend the library’s capabilities while remaining respectful of its landmarked architecture.

New program spaces, flexible reading rooms, and an equitable, accessible entry sequence enhance the visitor experience without competing with the historic building. The result is an addition that feels connected to the original library while supporting the evolving needs of Seattle’s neighborhoods.
