Building the Next Chapter.
SHKS Architects partnered with the North Olympic Library System beginning in 2014 to complete a library needs assessment and feasibility study exploring the expansion of the existing 6,000 square foot Sequim Library. In preparation for a Library Capital Facilities Area funding measure, SHKS developed conceptual designs for the expansion in 2017. Through a series of workshops with staff, stakeholders, and community members, the project evolved into a 3,800 square foot addition that responds directly to the community’s needs.
The completed expansion enhances the library’s single story structure with light filled, flexible spaces designed for learning, gathering, and community use. SHKS provided architecture, interior design, and construction administration services through project completion.
The expanded library incorporates a range of sustainable design strategies, including abundant natural daylighting, a 50 kW photovoltaic array with on site battery storage, a high performance building envelope, and Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC systems. Together, these features position the project for LEED Silver certification and establish it as Washington State’s first Net Zero library.
The completed library now provides a welcoming, resilient civic space that will serve the Sequim community for generations.
