Fort Nisqually is more than a collection of historic buildings.

It is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most significant living history museums, preserving the legacy of the Hudson’s Bay Company and the region’s early trading communities within Point Defiance Park.

SHKS partnered with Parks Tacoma to restore and renew several historic structures, balancing preservation standards with authenticity while supporting the museum’s educational mission.

Originally established in 1833 near present-day DuPont as a trading post, the fort was relocated to Point Defiance in the 1930s to preserve surviving buildings. Today it is one of the nation’s premier living history museums.
