Creating a community and educational resource.
SHKS Architects worked with the Walla Walla County Rural Library District (WWCRLD) to develop a new 3,200-square-foot library to serve the local community and provide a gathering place for residents. The form, scale, and economy of the library recall the simplicity of buildings common to the location’s agricultural landscape.
The new building strengthens the relationship that the library has with the town of Touchet and provides a resource for students from the neighboring school. The library includes a meeting room, public access computers, and reading nooks for patrons of all ages, connecting community across generations. The design utilizes mobile shelving to allow easy reconfiguration to meet evolving library services.
