Creating a richer experience in an academic setting.
The Tateuchi East Asia Library, located in Gowen Hall on the University of Washington campus, provides research assistance and access to Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Tibetan resources. SHKS worked with UW Libraries staff, stakeholders, and the project management team to create more active learning spaces for students and modernize the existing library. Through a series of design meetings, SHKS presented and refined a range of design options. The selected design improves access to daylight in spaces around the central Reading Room and provides accessible study areas for students. Additional signage was created with a consistency and clarity to contribute an ease of wayfinding and offer the space’s assorted user groups a richer experience in the academic setting.
