Universal accessibility supports a historic Seattle landmark.
The Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) Brick Building was constructed for the Seattle Public Schools in 1918, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a City of Seattle landmark. SHKS Architects worked with the PNA and the City of Seattle Landmarks Architectural Review Committee to design a universally accessible building entry and elevator. The elevator provides access to program areas on all three levels. The exterior entry ramp incorporates seating, landscape, and lighting improvements, enhancing the experience for all building visitors. Following the award of a 4Culture grant, SHKS worked with the PNA and the contractor to upgrade the seismic resistance of the building after construction had begun. All modifications complied with the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
