Public spaces reflecting Tacoma’s industrial past.
SHKS Architects, in collaboration with landscape architect Site Workshop, partnered with Parks Tacoma to design the new Melanie Jan LaPlant Dressel Park. Once home to a steam plant along the waterfront, the area was designated a Superfund site, with environmental remediation beginning in the 1980’s. The park’s design provides opportunities to reflect on Tacoma’s industrial past, affirming Parks Tacoma’s vision for a publicly accessible and energized Foss Waterway. The project included a themed play area with pedestrian bridge and play tower, as well as a pavilion with an event space and accessible bathrooms. The design of the pavilion responds to site circulation, guiding pedestrians along the wide promenade connecting Dock Street with the newly developed esplanade. A large sliding glass door at the pavilion’s corner opens the event space to adjacent picnic areas, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor activities and enhancing the park’s overall experience.
