A new municipal services facility for Camano Island.
The new 8,560-square-foot Island County Administration Building replaced an aging and undersized facility. The generous public reception area, service counter, and collaborative workspaces enable the county’s administrative and Sheriff’s Department staff to better serve the residents of Camano Island. A large public meeting space and several conference rooms are available for community meetings and events. The building uses locally sourced materials, natural ventilation, and daylight to create a healthy and comfortable workplace. A long span wood structure allows flexible planning to accommodate future growth. A long span wood structure allows flexible planning for future growth. A new accessible parking area and landscape improvements connect adjacent existing buildings to form a modest civic campus. An effort was made, once optimal siting was established, to modulate the building’s massing to provide a visually appealing and relatable form within its existing context.
